Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 942

Here's another fun one; a penguin investigation follow-up to a very recent Weekly Penguin entry. Remember the six adorable tiny penguins I was gifted by a good friend for the TAGAP's 18th anniversary? Their source was unknown, but something about them indicated to me that they were board game pieces of some sort.

So, some penguin detective work and second-hand websites later, may I present to you; Pingu by Ravensburger!

The box of the game Pingu from front and back.

Not to be confused by THE Pingu, by the way, somehow Ravensburger got away with using the name. The edition shown here is the 1996 Finnish version. The tag in the bottom corner of the box indicates that this was 'the children's game of the year' in Finland for the year. It's actually a thing here, a respected awards given every year for innovative and fun board games.

The game comes with 24 penguins and a plastic ice berg. The ice berg sits on wobbling on a poke and the aim of the game is to be able to place as many penguins as you can on the ice. It's not just a simple weight distribution puzzle, as the placement spots for the penguins slope ever so slightly, virtually ensuring it is impossible to place all the penguins and inevitable some topple.

To capture the photo, I cheated. I placed my glove under the ice berg making sure it is tilted slightly backwards and carefully 'front-loaded' it with the penguins.
