Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 428

You know, I didn't even realise how apt a follow-up this was to the previous week, as we go from one kind of pocket penguin to another. See, here's one pretty famous penguin who we haven't featured yet; Piplup the penguin Pokémon!

Piplup isn't part of the 'Original 150', but comes as part of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, released in 2006. Since I'm pretty uneducated in Poké-wisdom, I can't really explain Piplup's stats, but I do know it is a water creature and it has the usual two evolution stages, Prinplup and Empoleon.

Now, I'm going to be totally honest with you; I didn't even now this little fellow existed until very short while ago. You see, the whole Pokémon thing has almost completely passed me by. I'm not into collectible card games, I've never owned handheld consoles and in Finland the anime is broadcast as dubbed – and I really can't stomach most Finnish TV cartoon dubs. I know my Pikachu and I did buy the soundtracks for the awesomely hilarious Poké-rap, but that's about it.

So, fast forward to early 2015 when Eetu Pykäläinen asked me that since I collect penguins, how about penguin Pokémons? My jaw fell open and I was like "Wait, that's a thing? If so, heck yes!". So, he asked a Pokémon fan and collector Laura Sirola if she could get her hands on a couple of Piplup plushies – and here is the first one! Thank you for these little critters Laura – and thanks to Eetu for introducing this wonderful character to me!

And while I don't know much about Pokémon nor do I sadly have enough time to take a plunge into a franchise this vast, that doesn't mean I can't go all squee for scenes like this;

(YouTube, curse you, why don't have 'repeat this forever' button!)

You don't need a translator for that; it means I need more Piplups! Gotta catch 'em all!
