Weekly Penguin 222

Now that we are on the topic of Oswald Cobblepot in videogames, I thought it might a good idea to pull out the very first Batman versus Penguin game I played; Batman: The Caped Crusader from developer Special FX Software and publishers Data East and Ocean. The game was available on almost every home computer of late 80s, but the one I have is naturally for the Commodore 64.

The game has two campaigns, A Fate Worse Than Death where you have to rescue Robin from The Joker and A Bird In the Hand where you need to stop The Penguin from taking over the world with robot penguins. You can choose which campaign to load and play them in any order you choose, but I guess I don't have to tell you which one interested me more.

I know many people found the game hard to get a grip on, since on surface it plays like a beat 'em up but it's more like an adventure game in structure. There's a lot to wrap your head around and reading the manual was a must. Since I was the only one among my friends who bothered to read the manuals, it might explain why everyone else seemed to disregard the game.

And if you want to see the game in action, here's the entire 9 min. playthrough of the Penguin campaign via YouTube and user laffer35.
